Fire Station Visit

We have been learning about fire safety. On Tuesday we were lucky enough to be able to visit Havelock North fire station. We learnt all about the special protective clothes the firefighters wear, and what tools they carry in their truck. We also got to use the fire hoses, even if we weren't putting out any real fires!

If you want to do any more reading about being firewise, check out this cool comic book...

Oral Health and Looking After Our Teeth

We are learning how to keep our teeth healthy and clean.

We watched a neat video about the 'Tooth Defenders'!  We all want to be Tooth Defenders too!  We have been given tools to be a Tooth Defender.  We have a new toothbrush and a little tube of toothpaste (it is very little so we will need toothpaste from home too!).  We have a chart to record that we brush our teeth every morning and night for 28 days in a row.  We can do this!

Mrs Pinker is also here with the Dental Van so we will be going in for a check up with her.  We went to see her today.  We now know where the van is and what it looks like inside.  Mrs Pinker showed us what she does when we visit her. Mischa was her model and Mrs Pinker said she has beautiful teeth!

Seasons Art

We are learning 'Time and Temperature' for Maths.

To fit in with our learning about the seasons, we created some beautiful artwork.
This artwork took us ALL day to complete.
Mrs Hastings was so proud of our commitment to our work and how hard we worked on them.  We have learnt that there is a process when creating a good quality piece of artwork.

First we coloured in the tree with brown pastel.  Then Mrs Hastings cut our art into quarters....we were horrified with this!
As a class we discussed the seasons and decided on the order of the seasons.

Before we turned each quarter into a season, we discussed what happens to the trees in that season.
We created one season at a time, drawing how we see trees in that season with pastels.

Then we discussed the temperature within each season and what colours we think of when we have those seasons and temperatures.  We used those colours to dye the backgrounds.

Here is our amazing artwork!  You can click on the picture to make it bigger.

Disgusting Sandwiches

We had Mrs Genet today. We read the story 'The Disgusting Sandwich'. Here is a description of the story from the Scholastic website:

We then made our own 'Disgusting Sandwiches'!!

On our sandwiches we put:
  • Bird legs (pretzels)
  • Stones (chocolate chips)
  • Fairy dust (sprinkles)
  • Dead ants (chocolate hail)
  • Snot (golden syrup)
  • Blood (jam)
  • Troll smiles (apple pieces)
  • Slugs (banana)
  • Toenails (chippies)
  • Dragon tails (carrots)
  • Sand (superwine biscuits crunched up)
  • Pond weed (lettuces)
  • Mud (marmite)
  • Tree bark (cheese)
  • Worms (spaghetti)
We got to choose what we wanted on our sandwiches.  Were we brave enough to eat them??

Some were delicious! Some were disgusting!

Maths- Position and Orientation

We have been learning the language used within this Maths area.  We drew our own garden scene and chose three directions within the picture.

Can you hear us use any of these words:
*next to          *beside          *by          *above        *below       *behind          *in front         *in            *on             *under

Unfortunately our names went missing when it turned our explanations into a video.  We can show you which one is ours though!
